THE INCREDIBLE KUNG FU MASTER (1979)

They shoulda probably called this THE 2 INCREDIBLE KUNG FU MASTERS since the plot revolves around a couple of teachers who start off as buddies but then due to jealousy open up rival martial arts schools. Sammo Hung plays another adept fighter who, as usual, likes to eat a lot. A mix of comedy and seriousness that never really works all that well. AKA KUNG FU MASTER NAMED DRUNK CAT and THE KUNG FU MASTER. Released on video as THEY CALL ME PHAT DRAGON.

RETURN OF THE FAT DRAGON (1993)

This was originally titled KING SWINDLER which would explain why it's not really a sequel to Sammo Hung's ENTER THE FAT DRAGON. It is similar to that movie in that it is a comedy. This time though we get way less kung fu and way more scenes of annoying little kids. For almost a third of the film Sammo is sent to jail and we focus on these kids getting into hijinks which really gives this an Asian LITTLE RASCALS feel. There is some gross-out humour including snot-eating, fart-gags and a piss-filled balloon to the face so that's something. A bit too shmaltzy for anyone besides real hardcore Sammo fans.

Fun fact: Stolen music from the horror flick TOURIST TRAP pops up when the 2 little kids are held hostage.

Sammo is called The Oriental Turtle but sadly never wears this Ninja Turtle outfit that appears in the posters:

EASTERN CONDORS (1987)

Sammo Hung directs and stars in this version of THE DIRTY DOZEN set in Vietnam. Pretty good action packed stuff that is mostly a war movie but becomes a kung fu flick for the big ending. There's a Russian roulette homage to THE DEER HUNTER and lots of bloody squibs are on display. Towards the big finale Sammo get to chop off the hand of his future real-life wife(Joyce Godenzi)  with a machete. Weird kink!

THE PRODIGAL SON (1981)

Sammo Hung directs and acts in this kung fu tale of 2 affluent kids whose paths cross. There's a pretty convoluted plot here that takes all kinds of twists and turns including a bloody massacre that involves necks being slashed left and right and then jumps right back into goofy-ass comedy bits with Sammo and his fat fu antics. If you can handle the jarring narrative jumps it's a pretty entertaining martial arts flick and even though it's over 100 minutes long it moves pretty breezily. AKA PULL NO PUNCHES

ENTER THE FAT DRAGON (1978)

Sammo Hung does his impression of Bruce Lee in this comedy kung fu flick. I guess technically he does his impression of a guy obsessed with Bruce Lee who wishes he was the king of martial arts. The humour, as in most Hong Kong films, is pretty retarded. Probably the goofiest thing in this is that one of Sammo's big enemy showdowns at the end is with an Asian fellow in blackface and a big afro wig. The most offensive thing, to me anyway, was Sammo punching a bunch of pigs for training right at the start of the film. If you want a lot of goofiness with your fighting this might be to your liking.

This is one of Sammo's first directorial jobs and he would go on to make 35 more features including that WHEELS ON MEALS with Jackie Chan that I recall being pretty good.

There is a 2020 ENTER THE FAT DRAGON with Donnie Yen in a fat suit and a bunch of CGI but it doesn't look like a remake or even very good at all.

ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND (1980)

This is probably my favorite Sammo Hung flick. Sammo not only starred but also wrote and directed this tale of a poor bumbling sap who gets targeted by a naughty priest/wizard fellow. Mr. Hung, like his buddy Jackie Chan, keeps things firmly in the comedy kung-fu camp but this one also throw in a bunch of horror elements including a haunted house(complete with one of those hopping vampires), a zombie and lots of magical spells that raise demonic ghosts that inhabit various people. As in a lot of these Hong Kong films from this era there's a bit of animal violence involving a chicken decapitation that might make not be great for the squeamish. Without completely giving it away the very last scene might be one of the greatest ever in Asian cinema (unless you're some kinda feminist with no sense of humour that is). AKA SPOOKY ENCOUNTERS
There is an  ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND 2 that came out 9 years after this but I'm pretty sure it isn't an actual sequel.
