Indonesian action star Barry Prima stars in this very low-rent version of an Italian cannibal movie. You get some animal on animal violence that looks like stock footage from some other film, people eaten by crocodiles and some very hard to believe "cannibals". I put cannibals in quotes there since there isn't actually any cannibalism on display here even though it is implied. The one thing I always recall after watching this one is how sad the orangutan, that our primitve tribe keeps in a cage, looks. It's almost as if he knows how terrible of a film he has been cast in.
The opening title tune is supplied by(stolen from) the German krautrock band Kraftwork. AKA THE DEATH CRY OF THE SAVAGES
Director Jess Franco had remade THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME a couple of times already in his long career with this being the worst example of that. It's not really until the last third of the movie that the plot seems to actually kick in with the first chunk feeling like a terrible music video with nudity. Lina Romay is featured still getting nekkid in movies into her 40s(Her English is a bit rough to comprehend a lot of the time) and there's some surprising cannibalism thrown in giving the title some relevance.
There are claims that this was Franco's last movie shot on film but the DVD I own look pretty similar to the shot-on-video dreck that he would be stuck making up until his death. A tough one to stay awake during and his output would only become worse after this!
This is the Italian cannibal film that has the 2 biggest stars to ever do these types of films, Stacey Keach(TV's Mike Hammer) and James Bond girl Ursula Andress. Don't worry though it's still full of all the sleazy and gross elements that you have come to expect from this gutmunching genre. Animals get ripped open and eat each other for real, cannibals get down to their usual business, there's a castration and if you watch the uncut 99 minute version(titled MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD) you even get some pig-fucking bestiality, rape and just generally more explicitness. A Eurotrash classic if you can deal with all the animal stuff.

Not to be confused with the earlier Tobe Hooper killer crocodile flick, this is director Umberto Lenzi's second cannibal flick(his MAN FROM DEEP RIVER back in 1971 pretty much invented this subgenre). This is the one that combines a very Jim Jones-inspired cult in the jungle story with your more typical cannibal antics. Instead of The Amazon this time we're in New Guinea and Lenzi doesn't skimp on the gore. Of course a good portion of the most gory bits are all from other movies including DEEP RIVER, SLAVE OF THE CANNIBAL GOD and JUNGLE HOLOCAUST but hey it's the thought that counts! Porn star R. Bolla(Robert Kerman) stars and he would return in Lenzi's final cannibal epic CANNIBAL FEROX the following year.
It's hard to rank these classic cannibal movies in order of entertainment value since they're all pretty similar. This one is somewhere in the middle for me with FEROX and CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST being on the top though.
The idea of mixing a softcore sex flick with a cannibal movie is an insane one, so of course Eurotrash legend Joe D'Amato gave it a shot with this and because it's so nuts it's one of my favorites in the "Black Emanuelle" series. It starts out more in the softcore porn vein and then once we leave classic sleazy 70s New York City for the Amazon it delves headlong into more traditional cannibal movie territory. Nipples and vaginas get cut off or open, heads roll and intestines get ripped out and munched on. No skimping on the sex or gore here so it's hard to say anything bad about this unless that's not what you are looking for.
The lovely Laura Gemser returns, DR BUTCHER himself, Donald O' Brien, shows up and multiple cannibals have a gut-chomping freakout of a time! Classic 70s sleaze!

Before viewing this I was warned that it was pretty crappy, but I found it to be fairly enjoyable. Maybe I was just in the right state of mind or maybe it just hit that sweet spot I have for movies that mix genres together. While it's fundamentally a jungle adventure epic it starts out as sort of a sex comedy then for the middle part it's a cannibal flick and then finally gets back to being an action movie for the finale. I can see why someone looking for a super gory cannibal movie would be let down but it does feature a body being ripped open, a leg chomped off by piranha and a little more blood here and there. Michael Sopkiw, of AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK fame, is our action hero and he gets some stellar-looking ladies who aren't afraid to get nekked as co-stars. A good watch if your expectations aren't too high. Oh and also if you're looking for any dinosaurs to show up maybe skip this.
Probably best known as ANTHROPOPHAGUS(but I first saw it as THE GRIM REAPER back in the VHS days, sadly that's the most edited version missing the 2 big shock bits) this is the gory tale of a sorta zombie-like cannibalistic monster running around a Greek island slashing up and chomping down on a group of folks including Mia Farrow's little sister Tisa. George Eastman plays the maniacal creature, and at 6'9" is the perfect imposing figure for such a role. There are a few lulls in the action after the meat-cleaver-to-the-head opening but it more than makes up for that with all the absurdly gory scenes to follow. There's fetus-munching, scalping, neck biting, a severed head in a bucket and plenty of stabbings to go around. It's all topped off when our seemingly decomposing villian gets his guts spilled and decides he's gonna chow down on them. Definitely an all-time video-nasty classic memory! AKA THE ZOMBIE'S RAGE and known in England as THE BEAST.

While this 80s trash flick certainly has a memorable title that's kinda the best thing about it. The title is also a bit nonsensical since there aren't any babies at all but there is some flesh-munching depending on which cut you view of this. I was lucky? enough to get to see the full 101-minute experience which cuts back and forth between various edits(one of which is titled ISLAND FURY). In one version there are actually large insects that devour people that apparently some numb-skull edited out of their cannibal family on an island plot in other versions. The main problem with this flick though isn't a lack of killer bugs but really a lack of anything all that gory(outside of one guy chomping down on a lady) or compelling. For a lot of the runtime it plays out like an 80s action movie without the action scenes. I think the main appeal of this lies in the fact that it's so obscure and not much else.
Another off-putting aspect of this is that it feels like 2 different movies that were edited together and that's sorta true since the orignal portions of the film were shot in 1982 and then the wraparound story, that takes place years later, were shot 6 years later to complete it.
This Pete Walker-directed journey into insanity sure makes for a swell Mother's Day flick. Of course you have to be the type of person who enjoys watching surgery on corpses with a drill, a hot poker into the guts, eyeballs smashed out of skulls, cannibalism and that sort of thing. This was rated X in England and while most of the nastiness is not shown in very lurid detail, for the time and country this was made this was pretty cutting edge in the gore department. This Joe D'Amato-directed slice of Eurosleaze starts off with a bang as our titular character, Papaya, chomps off a gentleman's genitals (which explains the alternate title of PAPAYA: LOVE GODDESS OF THE CANNIBALS) making me think I was in for something quite gory. Unfortunately ol' Joe then shifts gears and gives us a pretty unexciting sex flick concerning some islanders who are upset about a nuclear power plant being built on their land. You do get weird native orgies and a couple of dead pigs sliced open which is pretty gross. So if you want a couple of gross-outs while watching lesbianism and naked natives frolic about this might be worth a look. I didn't think it was a great example of either a cannibal flick or a sexploitation flick but still an interesting mash-up similar to D'Amato's BLACK EMANUELLE films from this time minus the lovely Laura Gemser.
So this ping-pong-ball-eyed cannibal monster man gets the KING KONG treatment(girls served up as helpless victims for him to rip the hearts out of) from the local tribesmen, who I think are also supposed to be cannibals, but it's kinda hard to tell since the one thing this cannibal film severely skimps out on is any actual cannibalism on display. The film mainly deals with a kidnapped starlet(Ursula Buchfellner) that's taken to the jungle, that just so happens to contain a tribe of cannibals and said bug-eyed monster, and then pursued by our hero, and director Jess Franco fav, Al Cliver. There's lots of nudity, a fairly mild rape scene and heads do roll since our monster enjoys ripping them off.
On a personal note many years ago I mistakenly left my VHS of this at my sister's place and was horrified at the thought of my young nieces viewing such a sleazy film. At least it wasn't CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or anything remotely as traumatizing. AKA DEVIL HUNTER, MANDINGO MANHUNTER and SEXO CANNIBAL
Director Michael Findlay, who started out with all those roughie/sexploitation flicks in the 60s, blesses us with what seems to be a tale of a Yeti run amok that transforms into a Satanic cannibals deal before it all ends. Things start out with an unexplained decapitation which is a great way to start off your film. The Yeti suit looks pretty crappy but that actual works and mostly makes sense within the story. They never actually explain why anyone would believe a Yeti would be hanging out somewhere in New York where there is no snow but I guess some things have to remain a mystery. The conclusion is a big swerve that you don't see coming (unless you read write ups like this one!) that really gives the movie a unique feel. Probably one of my favorite thing Findlay ever made.
Sadly the "special edition" DVD I have of this removes the song POPCORN by Gershon Kingsley and replaces it with some really loud and aggressively awful video game-sounding garbage. I guess that's still better than the old T.V. and video tape version which cut out all the bloody/gory scenes. AKA MUTILATED and rettitled for t.v. as SCREAM OF THE SNOWBEAST
So rumour has it that this was directed by Jess Franco under the pseudonym A.W. Steeve. Apparently the truth is Steeve is actually a French director named Alain Deruelle who worked with Franco at times(co-directed JAILHOUSE WARDRESS from 1979) so this thing plays like a sub-par Franco cannibal flick if such a thing is imaginable. The plot deals with a couple of knuckleheaded thieves who decide to kidnap a little girl and hold her for ransom. Things eventually get too hot so they flee to a safehouse that just so happens to be located right next to cannibal country(which in this case seems to be in the countryside of Spain?). There's a rape scene, gratuitous bathtub nudity and one big gross-out gut-munching moment but for the most part these cannibals are just used as background characters. Also these might be the most European-looking cannibals ever used on screen with some of them barely having a tan and just some paint on their faces making them resemble Toucans for some reason. As far as cannibal flicks go this isn't a very good example of one but it has peaked my interest in Deruelle's filmography since I don't think I've seen any of his other films and with titles like RAGE PORNO I'm not sure I can just pass those up.
I saw this movie when it first came out back in 1986, which was kinda hard to do since I was only 15 at the time and it was released unrated, but despite this struggle it instantly became one of my favorite things in the world. I could quote entire scenes from memory(especially any scene with Chop-Top in it!) and figured no movie could ever match it's insanity, gore and absurd humour. As I've gotten older it's gotten harder to ignore some of the obvious flaws with this film. The main thing is there's really no reason for a sequel to what is the greatest horror film ever made and if you were going to make one, maybe making it an over-the-top black comedy isn't the best choice. I can see why director Tobe Hooper wouldn't want to try and top the aura of the first movie but it woulda been interesting to have seen him attempt something at least a bit scarier. There are really just jump scares here and there and the rest is all gore and dumb 80s jokes but if you were in your teens or 20s in the 1980s or if you just wanna see a really goofy cartoonish version of Leatherface then this might be the best thing ever for ya.
There are 2 more sequels after this in the 90s which ignore this movie and in comparision make this movie look amazing! There's also a complete dogshit 2000s remake and a retarded prequel and finally another sequel(in 3D this time!) which ignores all those movies and somehow has people traveling through time or curing the aging process or something since it makes zero sense.
This movie starts out as a western and then turns into a horror flick by the end. It takes two exploitation genres and blends them together really well with the gritty bloody western and, strangely enough, the Italian cannibal film. I don't know if anyone ever attempted this blend before. Even in Italy where downbeat gruesome westerns were churned out by the hundreds throughout the 60s and 70s. This is probably due to the fact that the cannibal film hadn't become popular until the Euro-western had all but died out.
For a modern film starring big Hollywood actors like Kurt Russell and David Arquette this doesn't skimp on the blood and guts with a scalping, people ripped apart by hungry savages, arrows piercing skin(including cult fav Sid Haig's looking old and grizzled and mean), necks sliced, titular bone-tomahawks chopping off fingers, toes and hands and enough other gritty realism to fill it's over 2 hour runtime without ever getting boring. It's too bad this barely played in theaters near me or I woulda loved to have seen it with a bigger audience.
I'm not sure whether this is actually a better movie than THE HATEFUL EIGHT, which I did enjoy quite a bit and also showed Kurt Russell acting his ass off in a similar fashion, but this does feel more epic and there's no annoying Tarantino voice-over to take you right out of the film.
This movie was actually finished two years ago and was supposed to be released last year but didn't hit screens until yesterday so, of course, I had to get out there and see it. If you told me back in the 80's that at some point in my lifetime I would see a major release of a cannibal movie to theaters in the U.S. I woulda never believed ya but here it is. The film itself is a super-gory, fun watch if you're a fan of the 80's grindhouse Italian gut-munchers. The one real down-spot for me was the inclusion of some terrible-looking cgi-ants but besides that I can't say anything bad about this. Most of the characters here put themselves in such a stupid situation that you don't feel very sorry for them even when the most horrific things are happening to them or around them. The obvious but timely and appropriate anti-social justice warriors message comes through loud and clear which is nice. As far as where this fits in the cannibal film genre I would say this isn't the best one but for a new movie it's amazing and it's equally amazing to me that it was made at all and is definitely worth supporting. Sadly since so many "horror" fans seem to have a personal grudge against director Eli Roth for some reason I'm not sure how successful this will be. I'm hoping it at least spawns the sequel that is promised in it's after-credits sequence.
While CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is clearly the high-point and most well known of the jungle cannibals sub-genre this obvious rip-off by Umberto Lenzi has it's own gory disgusting appeal and on certain days I even prefer watching it to it's inspiration. It borrows so much from HOLOCAUST that it gets pretty ridiculous; Robert Kerman appears in both(though a much smaller role here), a big-ass turtle gets hacked up in both, a giant anaconda gets to squash a cute little fury animal and of course intestines get ripped out of people dumb enough to travel into the heart of the Amazon. Everything in this one is dumbed down a bit though and if you think too hard about it all it doesn't make much sense. It also, for the most part, foregoes the moralizing and just focuses on how much grossness can be put on screen in it's 90 minute run-time. It does seem like there was a competition between director Lenzi and HOLOCAUST's creator Ruggero Deodato as to who could make the bigger gross-out with Deodato starting out with JUNGLE HOLOCAUST in '77 which is comparatively tame compared to these two and then Lenzi responding with EATEN ALIVE in '80 which is a bit gory and rapey but not super extreme. Then it's all topped by the extremity of HOLOCAUST and finally ends up with FEROX which features a couple of castrations, heads lopped off, limbs lopped off, giant grub-worm eating, severed dick-eating, giant hooks through tits in an "homage?" to that A MAN CALLED HORSE movie, etc, etc. John Morgen stands out as the best actor in this whole thing (besides Kerman who isn't really used all that much) as he portrays a sleazy murdering, native-torturing bad-ass while most of the other acting is pretty clunky but who cares since it's all about how many entrails can be munched and how much blood can be spilled and this movie delivers like a greatest hits package of depraved spectacle. AKA MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY
Of course the title here rips-off the tagline from ZOMBIE but the actual film seems to exist because someone watched THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and said we can take this Leatherface character and throw him into a crazy kung-fu movie and hell, as long as we're doing that why not make it a whole village of cannibalistic Leatherfaces? Then they said we also need a very large horny tranny in this film for added strangeness so these people may have been insane. Usually in these nutty kung-fu/horror flicks the kung-fu isn't all that great but this one manages to have quite a few Jackie Chan-style battles involving a detective who takes on whole villages and kicks ass. Also it's filmed with some unique angles which makes me think the director, Tsui Hark, may have thought he was making some kinda art film which may also be another clue to the lack of sanity on the part of the filmmakers. They were however smart enough to throw tons of blood and gore into the mix with people getting ripped-apart, disemboweled and of course ultimately eaten just like the title promises. Add in some absurd subtitles, sound effects stolen from SUSPIRIA and the aforementioned tranny/would-be rapist and you have a pretty unique martial-arts flick which has been one of my favorites since I watched it back on a shitty VHS bootleg with barely visible subtitles years ago. Luckily there is now an official DVD release so you can actually decipher the dialogue.
After years of watching this on VHS and later on DVD as ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST(which really should have been called something like CANNIBALS AND ZOMBIES HOLOCAUST) I finally got a chance to see a battered 35mm print of this 80's splatter classic on the big screen with a surprisingly packed house of maniacs and misfits. The great thing about DR. BUTCHER is that it takes cannibals and adds in some zombies(although these zombies are more of your classical voodoo-style maulers(one fella even uses a knife as his weapon of choice)than the more modern gut-munching variety) and of course you get the titular mad doctor(Donald O'Brien) on this crazy island of madness. The gore is plentiful and guts are spilled. In one amazing scene the great Ian McCulloch(who was also the star of Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE, which is a movie this borrows quite a bit from) creatively uses an outboard motor to make mincemeat of a zombies cranium. All in all a great film to catch with a crowd of gorehounds, especially, as in this case, in a theater that serves food during the movie. I mean who wouldn't want to munch down a nice greasy burger while on the big screen cannibals similarly munch on some human entrails? Good times!
Another added attraction at the screening I attended was STREET TRASH writer and producer Roy Frumkes, responsible for the strange opening title sequence on the American released version of this film, who was there to regale us of tales of 42nd Street and how they had a flatbed truck driving around back in 1980 made up as a Butchermobile to advertise the movie. Amazing!

Written by Franco Prosperi(But a different Franco Prosperi than the guy who made MONDO CANE and all it's sequel mondo-films in the 60's. I guess it was a popular name in Italy) this movie was released under a few different names including WHITE SLAVE, FOREST SLAVE and AMAZONIA: THE CATHERINE MILES STORY but the worst one is probably CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 since compared to the granddaddy of man-eating-man epics this is one is pretty tame. There are cannibals but the main group dealt with in the story here is a tribe of head-hunters who take the titular lady hostage so instead of the expected gut-ripping and entrails-munching you instead get heads sawed-off and that sort of gory violence. You also get a lot of jungle nakedness for fans of nudity to ogle and a giant fake-looking alligator shows up for a cameo. On the animal-violence side you do get a leopard murdering a little monkey and a small snake getting beheaded so I guess that's something.
While I wouldn't really call this a classic cannibal flick there is something about the film that I dig and I've watched it a few times now. Maybe because it has a cool revenge theme going on that plays out well in a bloody climax or maybe just because of the title switcheroos that suck me in and by the time I start watching I'm hooked or maybe I just like naked blondes.
The opening of this movie informs us that this is a true story which based on real facts which, as anyone who has ever seen an exploitation movie already knows, is a big load of horseshit.
