MOTHER'S DAY (2010)
While it's not surprising that another pointless remake sucks it's kind of surprising that they took a sorta goofy 80's backwoods survival slasher flick and tried to turn it into a typically dull modern-day SAW-like pile of crap for the Hot Topic kids but that's exactly what you get. Since the director, Darren Lynn Bousman is responsible for a bunch of those shitty SAW sequels and awful nonsense like REPO:THE GENETIC OPERA I suppose that's exactly what you would expect. This would probably appeal to trendy mainstream audiences that like that sort of home invasion/torture thing. Why this is even titled MOTHER'S DAY I'm not even sure since it doesn't have many plot elements in common with the original besides a couple of characters names. Stick with the original and you'll at least get some laughs with your blood, rape and torture.
Just because the hot chick from RISKY BUSINESS got a little older it doesn't make her a very scary villain:

MOTHER'S DAY (1980)
"Punk sucks!" "Disco's stupid!"
I've seen this 80's slasher dozens of times and it's always been one of my favorites. Directed by Troma's head goofball Lloyd Kaufman's brother, Charles, this is technically only a slasher movie if you consider stuff like TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE a slasher flick and I do. It also benefits from coming out early enough in the 80's that all the slasher rules weren't set in stone like they would be later on. There aren't any teenage campers here, they're all independent adult women, but it does take place in the woods and similar to that classic this features a family of wacko's who do away with anyone that stumbles across their path. This family consists of a mom and her two semi-retarded offspring Ike and Addley. These two guys are really what makes this film stand out as they bicker about important issues like punk vs. disco and get into fist-fights with each other for fun. There's also quite a bit of rape and a dummy gets decapitated. Amazingly, since this came out in the 80's, there were no sequels even though the ending does leave it open for further forest-based murderous adventures. A classic VHS-era horror.
There was a horrendous remake of this in 2010 that starred Rebecca De Mornay that I somehow was able to watch before I realized everything new is a complete waste of my time.

THE MUTHERS (1968)
Not to be confused with the 1976 Filipino blaxploitation/action flick of the same name, this is a 60s sexploitation deal about bored suburbanites who become swingers.
There's a song by the 60s freak-out hippie band The Fugs called 'Saran Wrap' which is about not having a condom and desperately choosing to use saran wrap instead. I'd always thought that they had invented this bizarre practice but it is on display here so maybe they saw this film also(or maybe wrapping your dick to avoid babies, and for added freshness, was just a groovy kind of thing to do in the 60s??). Besides this one odd moment the rest of this film is pretty standard sex stuff with lesbian humping, schoolgirl orgies and that sort of thing. There is a bar called The Pink Swan where all the housewives go to screw around and seems to be some sort of whorehouse but no one ever pays up so I'm not sure how they make any money. Besides this mystery it was all pretty uneventful, and very softcore, but still a pleasant enough, boob-filled spectacle to watch on Mother's Day and the ending, which even features some bloody violence!, really comes out of left-field.
The very next year director Don Davis took scenes from this, and a few of his other sex-filled films, and made something called WILD OUTTAKES which is a compilation flick that I have yet to see.
THE MUTHERS The whole filthy film!

FRIGHTMARE (1974)
This Pete Walker-directed journey into insanity sure makes for a swell Mother's Day flick. Of course you have to be the type of person who enjoys watching surgery on corpses with a drill, a hot poker into the guts, eyeballs smashed out of skulls, cannibalism and that sort of thing. This was rated X in England and while most of the nastiness is not shown in very lurid detail, for the time and country this was made this was pretty cutting edge in the gore department. I really need to watch more Walker films soon. AKA COVER UP, ONCE UPON A FRIGHTMARE and, best of all, BRAINSUCKERS
Known in Spain as SPEECHLESS TERROR!:
