THE EXORCIST (1974)

What can you possibly say about this movie that hasn't been said before? Only in the 1970's could we get a movie, released by a major studio, where a 12 year old girl repeatedly shoves a crucifix up her bloody vagina while screaming out "fuck me" over and over. That kind of ballsy insanity died somewhere and things seem to get worse and worse all the time on the creative front. While this probably works on a whole other level of scariness if you believe in things like the Devil and God and all that kind of stuff I still think it works just as well as an insane iconic work that will probably never be surpassed in many ways. A shocking movie that actually has a plot. It's hard to imagine that once upon a time Hollywood used to be able to do such a thing.

crazy-ass epileptic-fit-inducing trailer:

  1. The original 1973 The Exorcist has several noteworthy scenes and some of them have been overlooked. For instance how does the amulet from Northern Iraq get to the possessed girl's home in Washington DC. What is the connection between the Northern Iraq prologue and Georgetown Washington DC? The girl is not possessed by the Devil but rather a Demon. Some say its Pazuzu who possessed her whose statue is shown in the Northern Iraq prologue. Pazuzu is either a Demon or a demigod who is the personification of the southwest wind and sickness. Another mystery is when the words Help Me are engraved on Linda Blairs chest. If the Demon is intent on destroying her then why would it write help me? Maybe the Demon is not totally evill and maybe has some good in him or its not the Demon who wrote this message. What is the significance of the elderly mother of priest Father Karras in this possession? The scene where Father Karras sees his mother in a subway station in a nightmare is chilling and disturbing as he tries to run to her only for her to disappear from view. A falling crucifix is simultaneously shown. This nightmare represents helplessness and is one of the most disturbing scenes in this disturbing movie. Regan becomes possessed as a result of meddling with an ouija board. Captain Howdy is who contacts her first. Captain Howdy is probably not the entity's real name and is just a prelude to the full scale possession which will come later. 40 years later The Exorcist is still one of the most effective horror movies. Another movie I would like to bring to attention is Look Whats Happened to Rosemarys Baby from 1976 which is a sequel ro Rosemarys Baby. Adrian/Andrew is a young man and the Satanists are manipulating him and one of them is Tina Louise who plays Ginger from Gilligans Island. Ginger is a Satanist? In real life Tina Louise is also a Satanist and not just in this movie. The scene where Adrian walks into a casino with mime makeup and where a heavy metal rock group is singing a sinister evil sounding song is memorable. A whole bunch of young people are shown dancing to pounding rock music as is Adrian and the film makers are trying to show that this is evil behavior instigated by Satan. In this scene Adrian puts on a human looking mask on the back of his head and a sinister black blobby monster like head replaces his own head. Is this supposed to represent the Devil? Strange and bizarre scenes fill this movie. Thank you for reading.

  2. I gotta check out that ROSEMARY'S BABY sequel sometime. I always figured it wasn't very good since it was just a TV movie.
