THE GIANT BEHEMOTH (1959)

This is a pretty talky 50's giant dinosaur-on-the-loose flick from the director of the similar BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. If you make it to the end though you do get some cool stop-motion animation from Willis O'Brien the guy who did the FX work on the original KING KONG. The monster here is also radioactive so he burns people as well as he stomps on stuff which makes him a sort-of American version of GODZILLA but obviously not remembered as well by most people mainly due to the fact that he didn't get 5 million sequels and also he doesn't have a very snazzy memorable name. Known in England as BEHEMOTH THE SEA MONSTER.

  1. My goodness, I'd never seen this trailer before! At 1:06-1:08 or so, a clip featuring Cecil Kellaway speaking and the drawing of the rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms has been inserted amid the footage from The Giant Behemoth!

  2. Good eye! I didn't even notice that picture. The line of dialogue is from BEHEMOTH though. It's delivered by Andre Morell when they're deciding how to dispose of the monster.

  3. Thought it interesting, too, that the same director directed both films.

  4. From what I've read director Eugene Lourie had originally written the script of this film as a mystery/thriller kind of thing but the producers had him add a giant monster to make this more similar to BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS.
Laurie also went on to direct GORGO which is another neat GODZILLA-like movie set in England.
