THE AVENGING EAGLE (1978)

AVENGING EAGLE has always been in my mind the greatest classic Shaw Brothers kung-fu flick.  It's got all the best features of this genre in one movie. You get betrayal, heroes that aren't always what they seem, an amazingly bad-ass villain, crazy weaponry(the only thing missing might be the flying guillotine) and some super bright red 70's blood to top it all off.  There's also an actual plot that goes slightly deeper than the usual "you killed my master and now I must get revenge"-bit although there is plenty of revenge to be found here also.  The acting is intense and star Ti Lung has probably never been better than in this.
Now a lot of my love for this movie might just be nostalgia from having watched repeatedly as a kid every time it played on channel 5's Drive-In Movie on Saturday afternoon's and loving it but having recently caught an awesome-looking widescreen print I think it still holds up for lovers of old-school chopsocky action movies.  I'm sure fans of these types of movies already know that Celestial has been putting out some really great looking DVD's on their Dragon Dynasty line so check 'em out for some good stuff.
